The XT interior was only available in one colour, black.\nThe Falcon XT was to be Ford’s answer to Holden’s two door coupe, the Monaro and the two would fight it out on the Bathurst race track for superiority. He took over the preparation of the cars after Dickson debuted the first one at Bathurst in 1979. Dickson then bought a second Camaro, a used Z28 road car, which arrived at Stevens’ workshop six weeks before the 1981 Bathurst. The Ron Dickson\/Bob Stevens Chevrolet Z28 Camaro qualified in 10th position and then were able to advance one spot on the grid in the Hardies Heroes Top Ten Shootout with a lap time of 2:44.505 giving them 9th positon on the starting grid for Sunday’s Great Race. For the first time the race did not go the full distance as on lap 121, a six car accident blocked the track at McPhillamy Park Corner. The Ford Falcon of Dick Johnson and John French were leading the race at the time of the accident and were declared the winners. Bob Morris and British endurance racer John Fitzpatrick, also driving a Falcon finished second. A lap down in third was Allan Moffat and British endurance racing great Derek Bell driving a Mazda RX-7. According to the regulations, the race was declared based on the timesheets as the race leader, at the time John French, completed lap 120. This is done so that crashed vehicles can be included in the results. This was particularly significant in this instance as a significant number of the vehicles involved held high race position. Moffat himself dominated the racing, taking four out of the eight race wins. George Fury, driving a turbocharged version of the Nissan Bluebird, finished second and Peter Brock in his Marlboro Holden Dealer Team VH Commodore SS finished third in the Championship. Moffat only failed to finish once at Sandown with a broken axle and finished every other race on the podium, including four wins, four pole positions and five fastest laps resulting in new lap records at Sandown, Symmons Plains, Wanneroo, Surfers (shared with Brock) and Oran Park. It was round 7 at Oran Park Raceway with Bartlett managing to finish in 9th position and ended up tied for 37th position overall at the end of the Championship due to this result. But the car was severely underdone and the car retired after just 4 laps. Two weeks later HSV debuted their new VL Commodore at the Enzed Sandown 500. Two cars were entered from the HSV team, number IO, driven by Larry Perkins and Denny Hulme, with the number 11 car driven by Jeff Allam and Armin Hahne, both HSV cars were Perkins built. The HSV team had a promising start with both qualifying in the top 10. The number IO car was able lead in its debut race for 30 laps, before a slow pad change allowed Allan Moffat and Gregg Hansford in a Ford Sierra RS500 to build an unassailable lead. The Allam\/Hahne paring failed to finish, retiring after 56 laps, while the Perkins\/Hulme car finished the race in 2nd place. The Monaro received a heavy face lift to satisfy a more demanding buyer. Introduced in October 1974, the HJ Monaro GTS, with its new facelift, optional front and rear spoilers, offered extra comfort, a comprehensive sports instrument panel of its own and greater emphasis on body detailing to further distinguish it from other models. Beefier HJ styling was matched by extra-strength bumpers. The HJ Monaro upgrade was more imposing than its predecessor and the GTS featured a prominent, blacked-out grille, bigger wrap-around rear lights, more aggressive side vents and decals. Full foam high-backed seats came in a variety of trims and colours. The GTS instrument panel featured multiple ventilation outlets and clear recessed instruments with international symbols. The first factory front and rear spoiler options gave the HJ GTS real presence, the deep rear spoiler and new tail lights in particular bolstering its sloping boot line. As the imported Chevrolet 350 was de-tuned to meet US anti-pollution legislation, it no longer made sense as a premium performance option. Instead, Holden boosted the compression ratio of the local 308 to close the performance gap. The HJ has proved to be a popular favourite amongst the Holden Monaro range. Its success can be attributed to a combination of factors: a revamped engine, clever design updates, and competitive pricing. These elements made the EH the fastest-selling car in Australia during its time. Catering to a diverse consumer base, the EH came in nine different models, including commercial variants like the Utility and Panel van, which retained some styling cues from its predecessor, the EJ model. One of the standout features of the EH was its new powerplant, known as the 'Red' engine. This engine not only offered more power and better fuel efficiency compared to the previous 'Grey' engine but also demanded less maintenance. The 149 cubic inch engine delivered 100 horsepower, marking a 33pc increase over the 'Grey' engine, while the 179 cubic inch variant offered 115 horsepower, a 50pc improvement. Despite the availability of both engines and a Hydramatic transmission for the Utility and Panel van models, the majority of EHs sold were equipped with the 149 cubic inch engine paired with a manual transmission. Designed for practicality and durability, the EH Utility and Panel van models featured laminated hardwood trays capable of carrying half a ton of cargo. Notably, safety was also a priority, with the removal of the driver's side door lock intended to prevent accidents during deliveries. The EH holds a special place in the Classic Carlectables Tastes of Australia Collection, marking its fifth model release.
